Honey chicken is a popular Chinese dish
served in restaurants or take-out stands.
The sauce combines honey, brown sugar, and soy sauce. The Chicken is
coated with the sweet honey sauce and cooked until it thickens. This dish adds more calories to the restaurant
because the Chicken is deep-fried and then added to the sauce. I like to make this dish at home to control
the sweetness and oil, making it healthier to consume. Even though people think honey chicken is a
typical Chinese dish, it is more like an adaptation of Thai and Vietnamese. You can add some vegetables, such as broccoli
or bell pepper, to enhance the flavor of this dish.
Ingredients:
4 chicken thighs, bone removed
Marinade ingredients:
1 tsp minced garlic clove
1 tsp minced ginger
2 green onions (separate the white and the
green parts and slice)
1 tbsp cornstarch
1 tbsp oil
Sauce ingredients:
1 tbsp honey
1 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tsp chicken powder
1 tsp Chinese cooking wine
1/4 tsp black pepper and chili flakes
1/2 cup water
Directions:
Use a knife to slash the chicken a few
times to allow the marinade to absorb easily.
Rub the garlic, ginger, and white part of the five onion into the
chicken. Then add cornstarch and oil and mix well. The Chicken can marinate for
30 minutes.
Combine the sauce's ingredients in a mixing
bowl, then mix well.
Add 2 tbsp oil to a wok under medium-high
heat. Add the Chicken skin side down,
cook until brown. Flip to the meat side,
and cook for a few minutes.
Add the sauce to the wok and cook until the
sauce is thickened. Add the green part of the onions to the Chicken and turn
the heat off.
Serve with steamed rice.
