Teriyaki is traditional Japanese sauce, which pairs very well with chicken, pork or fish. With global markets growing, you can find this sweet, tangy sauce with a hint of ginger and garlic in many supermarkets in the international section. After searching for quite sometime over the Internet and watching some cooking shows, I came up with this very satisfying teriyaki sauce.
Ingredients:
2 cups soy sauce
1 cup mirin (sweet wine similar to sake but lower in alcohol)
1 cup chopped pineapple
1/2 Granny Smith apple chopped
4 cloves garlic smashed
2 inch ginger sliced
1/3 cup sugar
1 tbs honey
1/4 cup rice wine vinegar
2 dry chili peppers (optional)
2 tbs sesame oil (optional)*
Direction:
Place all the ingredients except the sesame oil in sauce pan to boil. Simmer for 40 minutes. Turn the heat off. Let it cool for 1 hour. Drain, add sesame oil, and store in the refrigerator.
*Sesame oil has a strong flavor, so you might want to keep a more neutral flavor by substituting olive oil instead.
